Contentment

‭Philippians‬ ‭4:10‭-‬13‬ ‭NIV‬
[10] I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. [11] I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. [12] I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. [13] I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Who Do You Think You Are?

1. Disciples are learners

‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18‭-‬20‬ ‭NIV‬
[18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. [19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

2. We take our cue for learning from The Lord

[8] Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered

What’s the secret?

1. Learning contentment is a process

2. gratitude is the pathway to contentment

‭James‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭NIV‬
[17] Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Psalms‬ ‭95:1‭-‬2‬ ‭NIV‬
[1] Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. [2] Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.

3. We learn contentment by following Paul’s example and by the teaching of the Holy Spirit

‭Philippians‬ ‭4:9‬ ‭NIV‬
[9] Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

‭John‬ ‭14:26‬ ‭NIV‬
[26] But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

True contentment

1. Christian contentment is not circumstantial

‭Philippians‬ ‭4:11‭-‬12‬ ‭NIV‬
[11] I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. [12] I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.

2. being content in every circumstance does not mean we are happy with every circumstance

‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:9‭-‬12‬ ‭NIV‬
[9] Do your best to come to me quickly, [10] for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. [11] Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. [12] I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

3. Christian contentment is the conviction that Christ is Enough

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me
